It’s Christmas eve, and I just posted my latest audio podcast episode. This podcast is my holiday gift to you, because I think it is wonderful. I can’t take any credit for it being wonderful. I really can’t.
It’s wonderful because it’s the sound of a happy child explaining how she’s made her little life work as a transgender kid, in defiance of the odds and her own mother’s doubts and resistance, and all at the tender and magnificent age of six.
I asked M. last week if I could interview her. I expected her to turn me down, or for her to lose interest after one or two questions. But something new and wonderful happened, and she warmed to the microphone, leaned back into the couch pillows, and waxed on, at length, about the trials and triumphs of her little life so far.
God, I’m proud of her. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Her answers were very convincing. Very grown up, and I love her advice to other transgender kids. The interview in her own words was a brilliant idea.
I still think you’re both incredibly brave when the world is full of nasties who will find a bible quote against your daughter or taunt her, But, your courage will be a beacon for other children in the same position and hopefully for some parents who can’t come to terms with their own children feeling this way.
May you both have a Wonderful Christmas full of dreams come true.

Gendermom: What an absolutely lovely Christmas gift and what two amazing heroes you and M are! Your daughter absolutely knows what she’s talking about and how articulate she is at such an early age! I’ve said it before, but your daughter is going to have a wonderful life of happiness and love thanks to you, her father, family and supportive friends. I will soon be 64 and I’ve had to overcome much more than she ever will (I hope!) and I am happy and blessed with my life. I wish for M the very best of everything in her remarkable life, and the same for her remarkable mother. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year’s!

Marla, Thank you for one of my best Christmas presents ever!!!! I was crying throughout (happy tears)!!! I am one of those whose parents didn’t listen to her!! But as an adult I was finally able to be my true self!! You have a truly wonderful daughter, who is very courageous, as are you!!! Listening to your pods gives me hope that someday our struggle will be over!!

I just wanted to say that I applaud you for how you are handling this. I think this is really awesome for you and your daughter! Now I’m not personally transgender but I have recently met and befriended a few transgender people and listening to your podcasts make me very happy(: I get so happy that you are supporting your daughter for who she really is and not someone you want her to be. Also this helps other people understand what transgender is even if they haven’t met someone like that or have any one in their life that isn’t straight and have to transition and let people know they are something different. When people want you to be someone or something different than what you really are, that is the worst. Keep doing this and keep being awesome M!
I heard you on The Longest Shortest time podcast, and have been reading / listening to your archives. This interview was the best ! My favorite line: How do YOU know, it’s not a ru-el !!
